About the Department

The Department was established in 1995 following NUC’s approval. The first batch of students were admitted in the same academic year.

The pioneer head was late Rev. (Surv.) Udo W. Obot, a contract staff, while other Lecturers were mainly on part time from the Ministry and Industry. Some equipment was bought by the University while some were donated to the young Department.

Due to the global shift of focus in year 2000 from analogue to digital surveying and data informatics, the curriculum has been restructured and expanded to reflect the current trend and emphasis.

The name of the Department has also been modified to “Geoinformatics and Surveying” due to this new curriculum and in keeping with global practice.

The aftermath of these is the high interest by candidates to get into the programme and the commendable surge of enrolment. The last Nigerian University Commission (NUC) accreditation in 2012 accorded the Department full accreditation status, while the Surveyors council of Nigeria (SURCON) recently gave the Department full accreditation status in 2015.

Thus, the Department as at 2015, has full accreditation from NUC and our professional body, SURCON.
