About the Department
The Department of Building, University of Uyo was given approval by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) to commence her academic programme in 1995/1996 session but could not take off due to inadequate academic personnel.
The programme however, began in 2000/2001 academic session with 20 students admitted. With increasing awareness of the programme the students enrolment have steadily been increasing. Equally, the academic staff strength of less than six in 2000/2001 has now increased to eleven full-time and four adjunct academic staff to efficiently run the programme.
The management of the Department is greatly committed to developing a leading Building programme in the world that will be responsive to the development and challenges of the built environment. Tenacious pursuance of this goal led to the award of a full accreditation status in 2010 NUC accreditation exercise.
The Department is committed to sustaining excellence and has in recent years developed its manpower from none full time holders of PhD in 2000/2001 to a substantial number of the academic staff with PhD. At the moment, the programme has specialists in different spheres of the Building profession namely: construction management, facilities management, project management, construction technology, building structures, building services, and building maintenance.
THE PROGRAMME PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy underlying Building Education is to develop and advance the Science and Practice of Building Technology and Building Production Management.
It is important to emphasise that Building Technology involves building assembly/construction techniques, analysis and design of building elements, materials of construction and their testing; while Building Production Management involves Buildability and Maintainability Analysis, Construction Planning and managing of production process in the areas of Site Management, Contract Management, Financial Management, and Maintenance.
The dynamism in the construction industry demand a specialist who should be vested with the requisite knowledge and training in the planning and control of the building production process by the use of modern methods and techniques of building production management to ensure time, cost and quality attainment of project execution.
Therefore, the Building graduates are expected to devote substantial part of their lives to solving national problems of how to make Nigeria Technologically truly independent and break new grounds in all aspects of building techniques and processes.
