About the Department

BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING
The Department of Accounting was established in 1985/86 academic session in the former University of Cross River State, Uyo, which was a state-owned University.

The Department was started with 45 UME students, two (2) transferred students from the Department of Economics, and five (5) direct entry students. It was started to meet the perceived needs of the young people who needed to study Accounting as a discipline or career.

At the initial stage, the students were temporarily housed in the Faculty of social sciences but in 1986/1987 academic year, the students and lecturers were moved to Ikot Osurua (Ikot Ekpene) campus of the University of Cross Rivers State. Presently, the Department is situated at the Annex Campus of the University along Ikpa road, Uyo.

In recent years, the Departmenthas achieved remarkable progress in terms of academic staff strength and quality, as well as the number of applications received from intending undergraduate and graduate studentsyearly. It now offers programmes leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree, Master of Science (M.Sc) Degree and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Degree in Accounting.

The Department upholds a philosophy of broad-based education bearing in mind that Accounting, like every other business subject is an eclectic discipline and depends heavily on social sciences, humanities, natural and physical sciences. Italso insists on high standard and quality control in its teaching, research and conduct of examinations.
