About the Department
Brief Introduction of the Department: The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology was created in 1994 alongside four others; Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Bio-Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmaceutical Technology, Department of Pharmacognosy and Natural Medicine.
Dr. Jude E. Okokon is the current Ag. Head of Department. Those who have been Heads of Department at various times include: Prof Timothy Inyaniwura, Prof. Memfin D. Ekpo, Prof. Jones Akpan (Late), Prof. Paul A. Nwafor, and Dr. Herbert Mbagwu. The Department teaches Pharmacology to Pharmacy, Paramedical and Postgraduate (M.Sc. and PhD) students. Anatomy and Physiology courses for Pharmacy students are also taught by the department.
PROGRAMME OFFERED WITH ADMISSION REQUREMENT:
(a) B. Pharm: (Full Time) Admission Requirements: The degree programme shall last for five academic Years and the UME entry requirements for the B.Pharm (Hons) degree in Pharmacy are five credits at Ordinary level (SSCE) or School Certificate (SC/GCE) which should include credit passes in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English Language obtained at not more than two sittings. Each student is also expected to perform very well at the post-JAMB screening exercise by the university.
(b) M. Sc. in Pharmacology: (Full Time/Part-Time) Admission Requirements: An applicant for M.Sc. degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology shall be:
(i) A graduate of University of Uyo or
(ii) A graduate of any other recognized University with a first degree in Pharmacy, pharmacology, physiology, medicine, veterinary medicine, biochemistry or other related medical sciences and shall normally, possess not less than a second class (lower division) honours degree to be eligible for admission, except that candidates whose degrees are not normally classified may be considered under certain conditions as stipulated by the University regulations.
Graduate students without pharmacy or pharmacology background may be required to take remedial course, sit and pass examinations in the said courses, as may be directed by the board of postgraduate school on the recommendation of the faculty postgraduate committee
(c) Ph.D in Pharmacology: (Full Time (Part Time) Admission Requirements: An applicant of the Ph.D. degree in pharmacology or toxicology shall be:
(i) A graduate of the university of Uyo holding a Master’s degree in any of the field specified under M.Sc. with a minimum of Second Class Lower Honours degree save that where degree are not normally classified, the conditions as stipulated by the departmental postgraduate committee and upheld by the Board of Postgraduate school on the recommendation of the faculty postgraduate committee.
(ii) A graduate of the University of Uyo, with the M.Sc. degree in pharmacology and Toxicology or any related field who shall normally have obtained not less than an overall average of 60% in the course work examinations.
(iii) A graduate of any other approved University with either of the qualifications specified under. Candidates in these categories (i) and (ii) above may be required to take relevant remedial courses as well as sit and pass examinations in the take courses as may be directed by the departmental postgraduate committee and upheld by the Board o Postgraduate School on the recommendation of the Faculty Postgraduate Committee to make up for any deficiencies.
