About the Department
Anatomy Department, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Uyo, Uyo came into inception during the last quarter of 2002. It was then that we started to “hunt” for cadavers and acquire microscopes and slides. The initial teething problems faced by new Medical Schools Lecture Halls, laboratories, text books, qualified lecturers were evident. Today we are proud to say that we have one of the largest and best equipped laboratories in Nigeria. Our laboratories Technologist are talented and dependable-they prepare our Microscope slides and human skeleton. The staff situation though adequate for now, will need to be beefed up due to the ever expanding number of programmes and students. Our crack academic team includes devoted professional anatomists and medical doctors; some of them had previously taught in various Departments of Anatomy in foreign and local universities such as in Port Harcourt, Calabar, Ibadan, Lagos, Maiduguri and can be ranked among the best Anatomy Lecturer in Nigeria.
Modern equipment and materials for teaching and research like microtomes, microscopes, cryostat and cadavers among others are available and adequate for use by staff and students. Our department can compete favourably (in terms of manpower, equipment and laboratories) with other medical schools in Nigeria. Due to the calibre of lecturers available, the department has commenced the Ph.D and M.Sc. programmes to complement the B.Sc. programme which commenced in 2005.
The University administration is solidly behind us in our effort to make our department to sustain the giant strides accomplished over the years so that our reputation and fame may outlive those of the renowned anatomists of old such as Andreas Vesalius, William Harvey, Aristotle, Herophilus, Galen, Leonardo da Vinci and others. We are glad to say that our department has been granted full accreditation status by the National Universities Commission (NUC), an unusual feat recorded during the first visit to the Department in 2007 by the NUC and also by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES
PHILOSOPHY
Anatomy is derived from the Greek word ANATOME which means dissection. This discipline involves the study of the structure of organisms and covers many areas namely:
- Gross Anatomy (Macroscopic Anatomy) which is the study of structures seen with the naked eye.
- Descriptive Anatomy which is the study of individual parts of organisms.
- Histology (Microscopic Anatomy) which is the study of structures with the aid of a microscope.
- Embryology which is the study of the developing organism, especially human beings.
- Applied Anatomy which relates to diagnosis and treatment of abnormalities encountered in the practice of Medicine.
- Comparative Anatomy which is the comparison of the structure of different animals.
- Surface Anatomy which is the study of form and markings of the structure of the body.
- Morbid Anatomy which relates to the study of abnormal structures.
From an analysis of the areas mentioned above, it can be seen that Anatomy is indispensable in the study of Medicine and other closely related disciplines. In recent times, the study of Anatomy has advanced tremendously with the incorporation of the use of transmission and scanning electron microscopes, cytology, molecular biology, immunohistochemistry and genetics.
OBJECTIVES
The curriculum in the Department of Anatomy, University of Uyo, has been designed to provide Medical students and students undertaking a Bachelor of Science degree programme in Anatomy and related disciplines with an in-depth knowledge in the field of Anatomy which is required for the production of well-trained medical and other science graduates; and to prepare a cadre of prospective Anatomy Teachers.
UNITS OF THE DEPARTMENT
