Vice-Chancellor Hosts Dignitaries, Friends at Country Home
The 9th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Prof. Christopher Nyong Ekong, on Monday, June 22, 2026, hosted dignitaries and friends at his residence in Uyo, reaffirming his reputation for valuing relationships and personal hospitality.
Prof. Ekong was inaugurated last week as the helmsman of the federal institution, with his tenure commencing June 16, 2026. He hits the ground running by renewing and refreshing good memories with old time friends, who visited him at home for continued celebration and inauguration bash.
During the event, the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, State Ex-officio II, Comrade Patience Nnyeneime Okoroafor as well as the Student Union President, University of Uyo, Comrade Utibe Afia, seized the opportunity to present a gift to the new Chief Executive.
Student leaders described Prof. Ekong as a jolly good fellow and said, the University is blessed to have this exceptional leader at a time like this. They noted, that beyond academia, Prof. Ekong has served Akwa Ibom State and the nation in multiple capacities.
Other speakers who poured in goodwill messages described Ekong as a leader who served as Commissioner at the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission, Special Adviser in the Bureau of Youth and Culture, Commissioner for Youths & Culture, and later Commissioner for Economic Development and Chief Economic Adviser to Akwa Ibom State Government.
He also served as Chairman of Akwa United Football Club and Vice Chairman of the AKS Executive Council Committee for Verification of Omitted Villages and Clans.
At the federal level, Prof. Ekong is a member of the National Institute for Social & Economic Research and sits on the Governing Council of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Delta State.
Born October 25, 1967 in Kaduna, the Professor of Monetary and Development Economics and second UNIUYO alumnus to become helmsman, who joined the institution as academic staff in 1993.
With grace on his shoulders, he rose through the ranks as Head of Department, Dean of Social Sciences, and Director of International Programmes, Chairman Committee of Deans before his appointment as Vice-Chancellor.
