Appointment of UNIUYO 9th Vice-Chancellor
The 10th Governing Council of the University of Uyo at its special meeting held on Thursday April 30, 2026, announced the appointment of Professor Christopher Nyong Ekong as the 9th Vice-Chancellor of the Institution. The appointment is for a single term of five (5) years.
The announcement was made by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Muiz Banire, SAN, following a rigorous, transparent and merit-based selection process in line with the provision of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provision) Amendment Act 2003 and the extant laws.
Prof. Ekong emerged top after a comprehensive interview of candidates recommended by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board to the Governing Council, which the Council selected one of them as the new Vice-Chancellor.
He is a Professor of Monetary and Development Economics from the Department of Economics in the University of Uyo. He hails from Uyo Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State. He is the second alumnus of the University to be appointed Vice-Chancellor, two-term Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and held sway as Chairman, Committee of Deans.
It would be recalled that on account of the institution’s inability to produce a substantive Vice-Chancellor at the expiration of the 8th substantive Vice-Chancellor’s tenure on December 1, 2025, the Federal Government appointed an Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel G. Odewumi, to steer a leadership transition for the University.
Consequently, there was a formal handing over of duty from the outgone Acting Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Samuel G. Odewumi to the 9th Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christopher N. Ekong, on Tuesday June 16, 2026, at the Vice-Chancelor’s office, Central Administrative Building of the Main Campus, Nwaniba Road, Uyo.
Meanwhile, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of 10th Governing Council, extends his heartfelt felicitations to the new Vice-Chancellor, while expressing earnest appreciation to the outgone Acting Vice-Chancelor for the selfless service delivered to the institution during the period, and wishes him well.
